1. Before opening
Sign in with your own account. Confirm the outlet, terminal, receipt printer and scanner. Check that the correct business date, tax settings and approved payment methods are available. Never reuse another cashier's open session.
For practice, open the demo landing page and choose Retail Shop. Confirm the company, outlet and terminal shown above the till. The demo administrator can see more controls than a restricted cashier account.
2. Open the till
- Confirm that the displayed terminal is the one assigned to you.
- Count the physical starting cash.
- Enter that amount in Opening float and select Open Till.
- Check the confirmation and the open-session details before the first sale.
- Report a discrepancy immediately; do not compensate through a false transaction.
3. Complete a sale
- Scan a barcode or search by product name, SKU or category.
- Confirm the item, quantity allowed by the item's unit and configured POS mode, unit price and VAT treatment.
- Add the customer when the sale requires an identified account or invoice.
- Review the cart total before opening payment.
- Select the amount tendered and approved payment method, then complete once.
4. Manual items and discounts
Use a Manual Item/Open Price line only for an authorised uncatalogued service or approved variable-price item. Enter a clear description, quantity, price and tax treatment. Discounts must follow the client's policy; amounts above the configured threshold require supervisor approval and remain auditable.
5. Payments and change
Choose the actual method used: Cash, Card, MCB Juice, Mobile Wallet, Bank Transfer or another configured label. For cash, enter the amount received and return the displayed change. Use split tender only where configured and reconcile every component at close.
Recording a payment method in POS is not proof that an external card terminal or wallet has collected the money. Confirm the payment on the relevant device or provider before completing the sale.
Quantity and discount entry
- Whole-unit modes use quantities such as 1, 2 or 3. Modes configured for fractional quantities allow up to three decimal places; verify the item's unit before entering a fraction.
- Discounts accept two decimal places. Choose % for a percentage such as 7.50%, or the currency option for an amount such as Rs 25.50.
- Line discounts apply to individual items. The cart discount applies after line discounts and before VAT. Check both levels to avoid an unintended double discount.
- If supervisor authorisation is requested, ask an authorised supervisor to enter their own credentials. Do not borrow or retain them.
6. Hold and resume
Hold an unfinished cart instead of completing a false sale. When the customer returns, resume the correct cart and recheck quantities, prices, tax and customer before payment.
7. Returns and refunds
- Find the original sale.
- Select only the quantity being returned.
- Record the approved reason and verify the credit note.
- Confirm whether stock should be restored and which refund method is authorised.
- Check customer balance, VAT, stock and payment consequences.
8. Receipt printing
Preview the receipt before printing when appropriate. Reprinting an existing receipt must not create a second sale. The configured profile may be 58 mm, 80 mm or A4 and should display the approved outlet identity, VAT totals, payment evidence and footer.
9. Close and reconcile
- Stop selling through the session being closed.
- Count physical cash independently and enter the closing count.
- Compare expected cash, actual cash, non-cash payments and the variance.
- Explain and escalate any variance under the client's cash-control policy.
- Close once and retain the frozen Z-report as shift evidence.
Worked example: a cash sale
In a clean retail demo, open with Rs 1,000. Add one water at Rs 25 and one chips at Rs 30, with no discounts and the sample 15% tax setting. The subtotal is Rs 55, tax Rs 8.25 and total Rs 63.25. These are sample values, not recommended prices or tax advice.
- Select Add Cash. Confirm Amount is Rs 63.25 and enter Rs 100 in Tendered.
- Confirm change of Rs 36.75, then select Charge Rs 63.25 once.
- Review the PDF receipt. Return to the till and refresh before reviewing session totals if you used the browser's Back button.
- With no other cash movements, expected cash is Rs 1,063.25. Count independently, enter the actual count in Counted cash in drawer, then select Close Till & View Z-Report.
- The report should show a closed session and zero variance when counted cash matches expected cash. Never enter the expected amount merely to conceal a shortage.
10. Manager controls
Managers review discounts, voids, returns, sessions, payment mix, VAT, inventory movement, profitability and Z-reports. Barcode generation and custom barcode assignment should be controlled to prevent duplicates. Cashiers should not receive accounting, company-setting or unrestricted reporting access.
11. When something goes wrong
Getting help safely
- Stop before repeating a sale, payment, approval or posting. Check whether the first attempt already created a record.
- Ask your company administrator or supervisor to check your permissions and the record status.
- Record the screen name, document reference, time of the issue, exact error and what you expected to happen. State whether you were using the demo or your live company.
- For screenshots, hide customer, employee, bank and other sensitive details that are not needed to explain the issue. Never send passwords, authentication codes, API keys or payment-card details.
- Contact info@connecticutcoltd.mu with that summary. Your email application opens; nothing is sent until you send it.
Do not create live test transactions to demonstrate an issue. Use the demo for practice and ask for an agreed correction process for a real transaction.
